I made soap yesterday

Yep, that is what I did and it wasn't as easy as it was in the past. I have not had to make any soap for a few years because last time I made it I made so much it took this long to use it up. Well I found out you no longer can purchase Red Devil Lye over the counter. I used to go to the grocery store and buy a few cans of the lye make my soap and all would be happy. Well, Red Devil has decided not to make it available over the counter any longer, low sells and crack producers got the best of home soap makers. Luckily we found enough around the house to make one batch and I had to order more off the Internet. What a pain in the pa-toot!!!!

Oh well, one batch down and I will make more when my lye arrives. I made one batch of oatmeal/honey, 32 bars. It will have to cure for about 6 weeks then we can start using it. I can't wait.
I also finished the baby quilt top and have it on the machine quilting it. I will have it done today and will have to sew the binding on. That will be done and not on the back on my mind. I don't like having needed projects nagging me, it spoils the fun when playing. Don't get me wrong, this quilt was alot of fun to make and I can hardly wait to give it to my daughter but I will have to wait for just the right time.
Off to sew. Have a wonderful day. Dot

good job! i love making soap too...that's all we use anymore. Real pain that you can't get the ingreidients at the store anymore...cost a bunch more...especially now with the shipping costs.

Oooh! I bet your house smells wonderful while the Oatmeal/Honey is curing. That is my FAVE scent from our local soap maker! I find myself going into the bathroom...just to get a good whif! ;-) (I'm a cheap date!)

Soap making is definitely on my list of things to try . . . someday. Now I know where to come for tips when if I finally get around to it *s*

They are beautiful. I just used some homemade soap yesterday that had these little bits of something in it so when you scrubbed yourself you felt the gentle roughness of whatever bits were in it. Lovely. It was a gift so I don't know much about it but it was homemade. So wonderful.

We discovered we couldn't find Red Devil when my daughter needed it for a science experiment. I asked around and found a gal at church who makes her own soap. Bless her soul... she gave us a bit for the experiment. She said that meth makers use the lye and so they have pulled it from the shelves. **Thanks a lot idiots! So many things we can't purchase easily(like decongestants) because of you!** She also said it was a pain ordering if off the Internet. She has to sign her life away promising she is not going to make meth. What a pain!

I'm hoping for a soap making lesson from this gal someday. It sounds wonderful when she talks about it.

Can you share your soap recipe? I've been wanting to make oatmeal soap but the recipes I found are all that slimy glycerine kind - yeeech! I love that scratchy wonderful old style soap!

I love the fact that you make your own soap. That is so cool. I'd love to know your method to make it too. You must have special molding tins too.

Vicki W gave me some hand made Shea Butter soap and was it sweet! So different from the Ivory I use. I loved the way it felt on my skin. I'm actually tempted to take on a nother hobbie! lol Your soap looks wonderful! Thanks for sharing!

Wow, I hadn't realized you couldn't buy lye in stores anymore! I haven't made soap since having my son but often buy goat milk soap from a person in Nova Scotia who has a goat farm AND then makes the soap too - lots of work I am sure so I am always happy to just pay for it... for the time being. Wonder if my DH will think getting a few goats is a good idea? LOL. Anyway, your batch of soap looks GREAT.
Cheers!
